So, yes, absolutely, Happy New Year! and all that jazz, obviously with a new year we must all do the new start thingy where we set ourselves unattainable goals and promptly fall back into our old routine where nothing ever changes.
I'm trying a new technique this year, if I fail I win it is really rather good, I did it for smoking many years ago and that is working out superbly, I am a lapsed smoker...
Let me explain...
I didn't want to give up smoking, I just couldn't afford it any longer so I smoked a cigarette, and promised myself I would smoke another a 5pm that day, at 5.05pm I realised I had failed to smoke my cigarette on time and promised myself I would smoke it at 10pm, I was asleep at 10pm so in the morning I promised I would smoke it at 10am, of course I was busy at 10am so promised I would smoke it at 7pm, when I was sure to be able to fit it in, I missed that target too... I've missed every target for over 10 years now including midnight of this new year, I was busy drinking and waving my arms about.
So I am a lapsed smoker (or failed smoker if you prefer) and I think this technique could work for any subject matter... Need to lose weight? promise yourself one chocolate biscuit at 5pm if you forget it you have lapsed (how terrible of you) if you remember it, eat it, you don't lose anything and have kept your promise to yourself, but make another promise that you will eat one chocolate biscuit at 10pm (not before) then if you only eat them at the promise time you will have cut down right? Failure to keep the promise means the diet starts to work and we are all much better at failing I find so perhaps this will help.
